By Kwasu Alhamdu –

The Olowu of Kuta in Osun State, His Royal Majesty, Oba Hammed Oyelude Tegbosun III has tasked politicians and their political parties to stop playing politics with the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the traditional ruler, the coronavirus pandemic has taken the World by surprise adding that Nigerian politicians must ensure that the virus is tackled with all sincerity.

The Osun monarch who made the call at a press briefing at the weekend, said there is need for political parties to desist from playing politics with the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic and heed to the Presidential Task Force and Federal government’s advise which is based on scientific information they received.

According to him many people still don’t believe the coronavirus but prayed it should not be too late for politicians to be serious on the pandemic.

He urged the polititical leaders to take a look at countries like Sweden which is now regretting not locking down their country on time.

“Our country shouldn’t wither like America,” the Olowu said adding that some Nigerian doctors serving in the diaspora are dying due to the negative effects of the Coronavirus.

” In Nigeria we have clusters population in our cities, our people and religious leaders that are still volatile of the instructions given by our leaders are doing it at the peril of our people,” the traditional ruler said, observing that religious leaders should not lead their people to death.

“I didn’t see anywhere in the Qur’an that says Imam should lead his people to death, neither the Bible that says a Pastor should lead his congregation to death. Disobeying the social distancing order declared by the federal government can only lead to untimely dead,” The Monarch said.

He advised that political leaders not to mislead the people adding that the pandemic is a global disease nobody know when it will end

“It is good enough that the government is giving palliatives without taking cognisance that the palliatives are not reaching the targeted downtrodden but I believe the government will improve.

On whether the Federal Government works along with the traditional rulers to enforce the stay at home order, the Olowu said the Nigerian government has not relegated traditional institutions.

He insisted that the pandemic has taking Nigeria and the world by surprise.

“As we are seeing in some media the FBI advised American government, we expected our NIA to have advised us because NIA are serving us with external reports from all foreign nations, while DSS are serving us with internal security reports,” Olowu said while adding that if the relevant agencies had advise the government earlier, the preparation to combat the disease would have been more proactive

“This pandemic is an issue of concern to the security and social welfare of every citizen in this country especially the poor who can’t afford one square meal. I think the federal government has done reasonably well in that angle, though where they need to improve upon is sharing of the palliatives. If you look at the National Assembly they’ve also made effort to see that the palliatives get to the right people, the pandemic took them by surprise, am very sure consultation is on going that is why am holding my opinion and my view advising all subjects irrespective of their religion, tribe or States to obey the government’s directives so that we will be free from this deadly disease,” he said.

The traditional ruler noted that the sharing of the palliatives should not be focused on one geo-political zone but should be shared across the nation. If you look at the social media, people are saying that if NEPA bill can reach every house then Federal government’s N20,000 should be able to reach every house. I support as it is being said,” the Oba advised.

While commenting on the fight against terrorism in the Northeast, the Oba said what President Buhari has done in the fight against Boko Haram surpasses what the Chadian President did.

“Look at the resources the president is pumping there. He created the North East Development Commission (NED, which is similar to NDDC and well funded. We are not complaining because the President wants the end of this insurgency that’s why he is using sons of the Northeast, some of us support Mr. President for not changing the service chiefs because these are the sons of the soil, they know every angle, we keep telling whosoever that says the President should change the wining team does not mean well for the country.

” We can’t compare the sacrifice of Mr. President in the Northeast with that of the Chadian audio sacrifice because what you see happening in lake Chad and Sahel region few weeks ago is as a result of the effort of Nigeria Arm Forces,” he said adding that anybody that is conscious of the country wont be jubilating that Chadian military came to help.
