Delineate States Constituency Now, Senate Tells INEC

The Senate has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to carry out state constituency delineation nationwide.

The Senate’s stand came following two motions sponsored by Sen Orker-Jev (Benue North West) and Sen Utazi, Chukwuka Godfrey (Enugu North) calling for the delineation of some constituencies in the states.

Orker-Jev during his presentation, prayed the Senate to urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to restore Nyamatsor State Constituency in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State to comply with extant laws
and the provisions of Sections 91 and 112 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria (as amended).

“Urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to carry out a general review of State Constituencies in Nigeria in compliance with section 114 of the 1999 Constitution of
Nigeria (as amended) well ahead, and in preparation for the 2023 general elections; and Seek the concurrence of the House of Representatives in line with Section 115 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended)”

For Utazi, he urged the Senate to compel INEC to approve the restoration of Nsukka South State Constituency from Nsukka East State Constituency, Enugu State as ordered by the Federal High Court in Suit No FHC/ABI/CS/281/2015 and in compliance with sections 91 and 115 of the Constitution of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

He also asked that Senate should asked INEC to ensure the restoration of Nsukka South State Constituency from Nsukka East State Constituency to take effect in the next State Houses of Assembly election after the current life.

All the prayers were granted when the Chairman, Senate Committee on INEC, Sen Kabiru Gaya sought for amendment of the prayers to include every state and those who have been decided by the courts.
