Punitive measures has been put in place to anyone caught felling trees illegally in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The warning was part of discussions at a one-day public hearing on minimization of tree cutting in the area, held on yesterday at the Council’s Chambers in Zonkwa, headquarters of the Local Government.
A Kaduna State gazette on minimization of tree cutting said all eleven Wards in the Local Government Area will have Forest Guards to enforce strict compliance with the directive.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP the Chairman of the Economic Matters Committee and Councillor of Zonkwa Ward, Luka Bako, lamented the indiscriminate felling of trees in the Area, which has given rise to deforestation, and other environmental hazards.
Bako said residents of the area do not recognize the importance of trees to the ecosystem, thereby necessitating the imposition of the restrictions.
The Councillor harped on the importance of tree-planting, so as to preserve the environment against possible depletion of the ozone layer, Soil erosions and other effects of tree-felling.
Our correspondent reports that Supervisors, who will be appointed by the Chairman of the Council, will go round communities to create awareness on the negative effects of deforestation, and check the activities of the Forest Guards.
