Over 70 civil society organizations in Nigeria have called for the immediate suspension of House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh following his alleged assault on Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya in Abuja.

The incident, which was captured in a viral video, showed Ikwechegh verbally and physically attacking Abuwatseya.

In a statement released by Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), the groups emphasized the need for equal treatment under the law, insisting that “we are all equal before the law.”

They urged the House to adhere to its rules and suspend Ikwechegh, asserting that failure to act would signal tacit approval of citizen oppression.

The coalition called on the Nigerian police and the Ministry of Justice to ensure Ikwechegh faces prosecution, highlighting that he should not receive any special treatment while in custody.

They stressed the importance of protecting Abuwatseya from intimidation and ensuring he has access to file complaints against his attacker.

The statement also urged the National Human Rights Commission to prioritize this case and prevent any undue influence on its proceedings.

The civil society groups highlighted ongoing issues within Nigeria’s justice system, including the plight of those in remand detention, and called for urgent reforms.

As advocates for citizen accountability, the coalition pledged to continue amplifying voices demanding justice and reform in Nigeria.
