The Kano police command has rescued a 55-year-old man, Murtala Muhammad who has been chained by his father and brothers for over 30 years in Rogo, Kano state.
This is coming days after the command rescued two other men chained by their parents for seven and 15 years respectively.
Kano Focus reports that the police divisional office in Rogo local government area rescued Mr Muhammad on Thursday in collaboration with Human Rights Network.
Mr. Muhammad a resident of Kofar Fada, Rogo local government was said to have been chained by his father on suspicion of mental health issues.
Chairman Human Rights Network Haruna Ayagi said Mr. Muhammad was a business man based in Lagos state.
“He came back from Lagos exhibiting symptoms of mental illness.
“That was why his father decided to chain and lock him in a windowless room fearing he might run away.
“Meanwhile, the father has died but his two younger brothers kept him in chains.” Mr Ayagi said.
He added that the two brothers are now in police custody for further investigation.
The police spokesperson in Kano, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa has confirmed the incident to Kano Focus.
Mr Haruna, a deputy superintendent of police, said the command is conducting investigations and will brief the press later.
