The Jemgbagh Unity Forum has described the allegations levelled against Gov. Samuel Ortom by the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Sen. George Akume as a betrayal and threat to the co-existence of the Tiv land and Benue State in general.
The Minister’s kinsmen in a press conference held in Màkurdi the Benue State Capital led by their leader Chief Yandev Amaa-Bai who condemned the act, advised the former Governor, to be more matured in his approach to state and national Issues.
“Here is a man who has been shown much love by Benue people in the past but now wants to demolish democracy in his state by levelling false allegations against the Governor”
The Jemgbagh Unity Forum also described the Minister’s call for State of emergency in Benue as a call for anarchy.
“Is it because Akume was overwhelmedly rejected by the people at the 2019 polls for his 4th term bid to the Senate that he resorted to a call for a State of Emergency which is a call for anarchy?
“Other states that have worsening security situations than Benue their Ministers are rather cooperating with their state governors to find enduring solutions. We call on Akume to use his office and his close relationship with Mr. President to let him know the true position of things in Benue rather than potraying the Governor as a bad person in the eyes of the president”
“Will a state of emergency in Benue put an end to the incessant kidnappings, maimings, raping and killings In the state?
Two pertinent questions beg for answers here. (i) When has calling on the President to uphold his oath of office of protecting lives and property become a sign of disrespect? (ii) When has speaking out against well coordinated genocidal attacks of one’s people become insults?
“We hope the Minister has not forgotten the unprecedented killings and destruction that took place in Tarka, his home local government, Kwande, Gboko and other areas in the Tiv land during his tenure as governor. Was Ortom responsible for all those evil visitations on our lands at that time?
“Akume’s allegation of corruption against Governor Ortom is most unfortunate and laughable. If we may ask. When did he realise that Ortom and his government are corrupt? Is it before the governor left APC or after he left the party?
“Distinguished Minister, sir, the Open Grazing Prohibition Law which you are using it against the governor was initiated as a bill and went through a rigorous process passed by the then House of Assembly and assented to at the Stakeholders meeting in which the Minister was also present and spoke in full support of the law”
“We consider it a height of betrayal for you to turn around and pretend as if the law came out of the blues singling Ortom out for blame. Be reminded sir, that this law which is a crime to you has earned Governor Samuel Ortom accolades all over the nation”
“Akume’s allegation of corruption against Governor Ortom is most unfortunate and laughable. If we may ask. When did Akume realise that Ortom and his government are corrupt? Is it before the governor left APC or after he left the party?
According to Amaa-Bai, “This forum is shocked by Akume’ public statement that Ortom has created his personal army, stockpiled arms and is using same to harass and kill his opponentt, we have no issue over the invitation for Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and ICPC to probe Ortom’s administration”
“But we only wish to remind Akume that when you point one accusing finger at someone, four fingers are pointing at you, and it is said that he who comes to equity must come with clean hands,”
He lamented that based on the Minister’s statements, Jemgbagh people were considered as traitors as well as those who hate the progress of others.
