ActionAid Trains 57 TBAs To Reduce Maternal, Child Mortality Rate In Abuja

An international humanitarian and nonprofit making organization, ActionAid Nigeria, AAN, has trained 57 Traditional Bed Attendants, TBAs, five Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, to reduce maternal and child mortality rates.

Explaining essence of the training programme at this time in the five Area Councils which include , Abuja Municipal,(AMAC,Abaji, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali, programme officer,on Mobilizing Action Towards the Abolition of Infanticide, MATAI, Rahila James,said the essence of the training is to see how we can monitor, and safe care child delivering processes through experience sharing.

James said we have trained them before, and they have come back to share their experience how were they able to apply the first training and how are they now improving on the safe child care delivery process in the community.

According to her, we look how we can break away from cultural practices ensuring that children right are protected and mother’s rights is also protected because we discovered that these Traditional Bed Attendants are still carried out such cultural practices and norms, this has caused a lives of women and children

“We discovered that Traditional Bed Attendants still carried out cultural practices and norms when taking care of women who going to give birth and these have caused life of women and children, therefore, we think how to break this norms and make sure that mothers child life are not lost.

“What are the right if children when the give birth to them,how can they leave because we discovered that when the mother of these children dies,they are tame as evils as the death cause of their mother, either buried alive or abandoned,so we are trying to break away from these harmful practices.

“We are also looking, how do we link these women to the primary health care centers which are under the area council to referral system where by when the situation or cases of women having difficulties in giving birth, so that they can refer the woman to the health care center and also the children there are going to be violated.

“For us,we want them to stop keep practicing traditional way of giving birth,this is the symptoms you can identified and go to hospital immediately,that is the kind of impact we want ,”she said .

Speaking in the challenges,she explained that ,at first, women from the communities are not willing to open up to us but after the training,they are interacting with us , giving us instances whereby the situation in the community has changed.

“A lot of our participants don’t have mobile phone number to invite them for the training,and have to go down to communities,so the challenges we have mostly is how to reached the community because they are completely cut off from the rural area, again, transportation to get there is very difficult, also,communicate with them is quite difficult too,for us basically, communication and road to their various community is not easy.

The Head Of Department from Kwali Primary Health Clinic, Dr. Samuel Adudu, represented by Maryam Buhari explained that the if they are well trained and they listen,and make good on what they are being trained for ,they would help our women in various communities very well and the impact if this training would make Kwali community women to be great.

He disclosed that the infant mortality rate in our council sometimes is very high, especially during th farming period,said “our women prefer to deliver at home ,they don’t like going to the hospital,some of them even delivered on their way to the farm,or when coming back from th farm,but with the help of TBAS and health workers in various communities, it will reduced mortality rate .

“As of 2 to 3 years back, the rate causality is at 70%but as TBAs are being trained and with help of community workers posted to rural areas, the rate has drastically to 30 to 40%.

“The Actionaid desk officers should looks for original TBAs, and even they don’t Know them,let them come to health department to enquire so that we give them the list of our TBAs so that they can be retrain, refresh their memories.”

On her part, Public health physician Dr.Christiana Samuel Kwabe explained that TBAs believes that what they have been doing is good and is normal way it should be ,but should be stop because some these norm usually increase infant mortality rate in the society.

“For example, if a woman delivers a baby and baby dies, men and elderly don’t sees that as a problem because they believe that child is just a new born,and they usually advised them no to mourn such new born baby and that would also increase our neonatal mortality.”
