Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa has announced plans to set up a judicial panel of inquiry to investigate the shooting incidents that occurred on 8th December in the Lamurde Local Government Area.

The events, which took place in Lamurde and five other affected communities in the Suwa District, reportedly resulted in the deaths of ten women and an 11-year-old girl.

Mr Fintiri made this announcement on Tuesday during a visit to the impacted areas in Lamurde LGA.

He assured residents that the panel would conduct an open, fair, and thorough investigation to ascertain the facts and ensure justice for the victims.

Mr Fintiri called for calm, emphasising that the state government remains dedicated to due process, accountability, and the protection of lives and property.

The governor noted that the Adamawa State Peace Commission has been engaging with youths, elders, clergy, and community leaders from the affected areas to de-escalate tensions and restore peace.

Describing the killing of women during the protest as tragic and unacceptable, Mr Fintiri highlighted that the victims were innocent and defenceless.

He stated that the judicial panel, to be chaired by a retired High Court judge, would examine both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident.

Mr Fintiri added that the panel would offer recommendations to promote reconciliation and lasting peace.

He assured the families of the victims of the government’s support, which would include assistance for education and livelihoods, as well as an increased security presence.

He mentioned that agencies such as SEMA and NEMA were already present to support displaced persons, asserting that security challenges would not hinder the provision of relief and humanitarian assistance.

Speaking on behalf of the communities, the district head of Lamurde, Pwahomakai Joseph, urged for decisive government intervention to achieve lasting peace between the Bachama and Chobo communities.

He expressed confidence that a transparent investigation, ongoing dialogue, and reconciliation would help restore peace and rebuild trust in the area.
