The Nasarawa State House of Assembly expressed grave concern on Monday regarding the ongoing killings and escalating insecurity within the state.

The lawmakers urged the state government to take decisive and proactive measures to put an end to the attacks, which they stated have been claiming lives across various local government areas.

The Speaker of the House, Danladi Jatau, made this appeal while presenting the legislature’s resolutions during a plenary session focused on matters of public interest, following a motion raised by Luka Zhekaba, the minority leader, regarding the recent spate of killings.

Mr Jatau commended Mr Zhekaba for bringing the issue to the House’s attention and acknowledged the contributions of other members to the discussion.

He also praised Governor Abdullahi Sule for his efforts thus far in tackling insecurity but emphasised the necessity for increased action to combat the rising violence.

“The House urges the state government to summon the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to investigate the killings in Obi, Doma, Nasarawa Eggon, Lafia, Keana, and other constituencies,” he stated.

Furthermore, he called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements and hideouts of criminals to the authorities.

According to him, village heads must also identify both residents and strangers within their communities for the sake of peace and safety.

Earlier, Mr Zhekaba expressed his distress over the continued attacks in his constituency, noting that two individuals were killed on November 10 while travelling to the Gidan Rai community, and another two were slain in the same area later that week.

“As lawmakers, we were elected to represent our constituents. It is the government’s duty to protect lives and property,” he said, describing the killings as inhumane.

Other lawmakers, including Mohammed Omadefu, Musa Abubakar, Solomon Akwashiki, Jacob Kudu, and Esson Mairiga, echoed the sentiment, lamenting the deteriorating security situation and stating that the state was “under siege.”

They called on security agencies to intensify their efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they are brought to justice, highlighting that insecurity is escalating daily across communities.
