The Nigerian Army Resource Centre has organised a five-day training for Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) of its 3 Division, near Jos, and Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace (JTF-OPEP) on leadership awareness and development.

Speaking at the event, retired Maj.-Gen. James Miyam, the director general of the centre, said that the exercise aimed at improving the capacity of troops within the division.

Represented by the Maj.-Gen. Sanusi Dahiru, the executive director of consult of the Centre, Ms Miyam said that the course would enhance the capacity of the participants in the ongoing fight against insecurity.

“The link between the junior and the senior officers is the senior NCOs; so we have this belief that as long as they are up and doing, they are knowledgeable and well trained, the chain of command in the military will succeed.

“The chain of command, right from the section commander up to service level, needs something that will hold it together. It’s like a bond.

“And so because of that, we saw it necessary that if we give these middle-class officers, the senior NSCOs, proper training, we will have a good command structure.

“And in line with that, we partner with the 3 Division to train these soldiers and other participants so as to tackle the current security challenges in the country,” she said.

Earlier, Maj.-Gen. Folunsho Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the division, described the course as timely.

He said that the exercise was in tandem with the command philosophy of Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

He added that the training would no doubt enhance the capacity of troops towards tackling the existing and emerging security threats in the country.

“If an officer gives the directive, the soldier carries out the directive; who translates that directive is the senior NCOs.

“So if it is effectively translated, you will have an effective operation at the lower level.

“And I want to believe that that will ensure that there is proper security in our country,” he said.
