In a significant ruling, a Finnish court has sentenced Simon Ekpa, a Biafran separatist leader, to six years behind bars for charges related to terrorism.
Ekpa, who claims the title of Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, was convicted for inciting terrorist acts through his social media channels, specifically targeting Nigeria.
His arrest took place in November 2024, with prosecutors presenting evidence that his online activities fostered violence and unrest in Nigeria’s South-East region.
The Nigerian government had previously issued a formal request for Ekpa’s extradition, and it is now awaiting a response from Finnish authorities following this sentencing.
Elanza News indicate that Ekpa has effectively already completed nearly one year of his sentence.
