President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Muhammad Babangida, the son of former military leader General Ibrahim Babangida, as the new Chairman of the restructured Bank of Agriculture (BOA).

The announcement coincided with the appointment of seven other individuals to lead essential federal agencies, signalling a notable shift in the leadership of Nigeria’s vital institutions.

Muhammad Babangida, 53, is an experienced business administrator with an academic background from the European University in Montreux, Switzerland, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Master’s in Public Relations and Business Communication.

He further enhanced his skills through an executive programme in Corporate Governance at Harvard Business School in 2002. His appointment is perceived as a strategic initiative to reposition the Bank of Agriculture, which plays a pivotal role in financing Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Other significant appointments include Lydia Kalat Musa from Kaduna State as the new Chairperson of the Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority (OGFZA), and Jamilu Wada Aliyu from Kano State as Chairperson of the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

The President also named Hon. Yahuza Ado Inuwa from Kano State as Chairperson of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), while Sanusi Musa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from Kano State, will assume the role of Chairperson of the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR).

Further appointments include Prof. Al-Mustapha Alhaji Aliyu from Sokoto State as Director-General of the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa (DTCA), Sanusi Garba Rikiji from Zamfara State as Director-General of the Nigerian Office for Trade Negotiations (NOTN), and Mrs. Tomi Somefun from Oyo State as Managing Director of the National Hydro-Electric Power Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC). Dr. Abdulmumini Mohammed Aminu-Zaria from Kaduna State was also appointed Executive Director of the Nigerian Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC).
