President Bola Tinubu has unveiled a scholarship programme aimed at students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), set to commence in the upcoming academic year. This announcement was made during a joint press conference with Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip Pierre, in Gros Islet on Monday.

According to a statement released by presidential spokesperson Mr Bayo Onanuga, the scholarship initiative is part of an enhanced cooperation framework between Nigeria and the OECS. President Tinubu highlighted that this initiative seeks to strengthen cultural ties and foster collaboration in education, trade, and development.

In addition, Tinubu revealed plans to introduce visa waivers for diplomatic and official passport holders from OECS nations. He expressed optimism regarding the potential for increased business and educational opportunities, emphasising the importance of collaboration in agriculture and food security.

The scholarship programme was developed in collaboration with OECS member states, with a joint implementation committee to oversee its rollout. President Tinubu remains focused on solutions rather than challenges, aiming for a direct approach to achieving goals.

Prime Minister Pierre welcomed this initiative, describing it as a significant demonstration of solidarity, with the expectation that students will begin their studies in Nigeria next academic year. He also noted that visa facilitation is a priority for the Nigeria–OECS Joint Committee, alongside enhancing air connectivity, trade, and tourism.
