The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has condemned the overwhelming presence of substandard products in Nigerian markets, primarily attributed to importers. The agency also cautioned local manufacturers to refrain from producing inferior goods for local consumption.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ workshop titled “Growing Businesses Through Standardisation” in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, the Director General of SON, underscored the necessity of adhering to quality standards for economic and industrial progress.

Represented by Mrs Talutu Athan from the Corporate Affairs Department, Okeke stated that the workshop aimed to bolster stakeholder knowledge and cooperation in standardisation initiatives critical for business advancement.

He remarked on the significance of maintaining a robust reputation for businesses today, as consumers are increasingly concerned with production methods. “To penetrate premium markets, our products must adhere to set benchmarks that do not hinder producers but ensure quality,” he asserted.

SON is committed to eradicating substandard goods, asserting that the sale of inferior products undermines the credibility of legitimate manufacturers. “We need your collaboration to achieve our goals,” Okeke added.

He concluded by affirming that standards are essential building blocks for resilience and success in competitive markets.
