The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) says Nigeria retained its position as Africa’s largest crude oil producer in April.

In its latest monthly report on Wednesday, the oil cartel said Nigeria’s oil output increased to 1.48 million barrels per day (bpd) in April, from 1.4 million bpd in the previous month.

According to the report, Nigeria’s oil output was the largest in Africa, leading Algeria and Congo.

OPEC said its data was based on direct communication.

Holding steady from March, the group said Nigeria surpassed Algeria, which produced 912,000 bpd, and Congo, which recorded 270,000 bpd.

However, according to data sourced from secondary sources, OPEC said Nigeria produced 1.47 million bpd in April as against 1.49 million bpd in March.

“Total DoC crude oil production averaged 40.92 mb/d in April 2025, which is 106 tb/d lower, m-o-m,” OPEC said.

On May 12, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) said the country’s oil production increased to 1,485,700 bpd in April.

The NUPRC also noted that the average crude oil production for April represents 99 percent of the 1.5 million bpd quota set for Nigeria by the OPEC.

On May 12, Bayo Ojulari, group chief executive officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, said the national oil firm will continue to drill oil in the north in efforts to ramp up production.
