Edo guber poll; Tribunal dismisses APM, ADP, ZLP’s petitions

Published

on

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has said that the lack of substantial evidence by the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) to back up its petition against the election of Governor Monday Okpebholo.will force the party to abandon it at the tribunal in the coming days.

APC expressed optimism that PDP may do away with its petition following lack of substantial evidence to support it as reflected in the inadequacies of the testimonies of the witnesses it presented at the Tribunal.

The APC’s optimism is coming on the heel of
dismissal of petitions filed by the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and Allied People’s Movement (APM) by the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja.

The dismissal of the petitions was handed down on Friday, February 7, 2025, following their withdrawal against the APC and Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Comrade Wisdom Isaac who spoke on behalf of the petitioners had explained that their decisions to withdraw from the cases stemmed from a desire to prioritize the welfare and development of Edo State.

He underscored the importance of maintaining peace for the flourishing of the state, emphasizing that the petitioners did not intend to disrupt the governor’s efforts in leading the state.

He acknowledged that there will be future opportunities to demonstrate their zeal to lead the state as they set their sights on the 2028 gubernatorial election.

Counsel for the Allied People’s Movement, Barrister Jackson Ehiabhi echoed the same sentiments, asserting that the petitioners chose to avoid distracting the governor from his responsibilities, placing the well-being of Edo State above their individual ambitions

With the tribunal’s dismissal of the petitions, a total of four cases have now been put to rest, with the focus shifting towards the petition filed by the PDP.

The APC however said that it is hopeful that PDP will follow suit by withdrawing its petition the way other parties did having been faced with real facts that their allegations lacked substantial foundation as evidenced in the weak testimonies of their witnesses at the tribunal.

In the meantime, APC and Governor Monday Okpebholo are expected to open their defense against the PDP petition to justify their victory at the last year gubernatorial election.

By Amos Tauna, Kaduna

The Kaduna State Government has expressed its appreciation to the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, in partnership with the Back to School Initiative, for their commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for girls from low-income backgrounds.

Professor Usman Abubakar Zaria, the Director General of the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority, made this statement during an advocacy visit from the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria and the Back to School Initiative, aimed at improving access to education for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.

He stated that improving education in the state would significantly contribute to reducing social vices, emphasising his strong belief in the initiative to ensure that girls from low-income families receive the education they deserve, both in the state and across the country.

The Director General highlighted that last year, the state government covered the Junior WAEC examination fees for 136,000 students, and this year, a further 173,000 junior students will benefit from this government policy aimed at raising educational standards in the state.

He further explained that the state government has implemented policies to eliminate obstacles that hinder the revitalisation of education in the region.

Reverend John Joseph Hayab, Country Director of Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, assured that they would continue their efforts to enhance quality education for all, particularly for children from low-income backgrounds, enabling them to fully realise their academic potential.

He added, “We recognise that many students who could have completed their secondary education have been unable to do so, which has prompted civil society to advocate for the Kaduna State Government to reinstate the policy of assisting students from low-income backgrounds in exploring their full potential in society.
