NUJ FCT Council Expresses Deep Sorrow Over the Untimely Passing of Former Secretary Rafat Idris

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has expressed profound sorrow following the unexpected passing of its former Secretary, Mrs. Rafat Idris.

Mrs. Idris passed away in the early hours of Friday, December 20, 2024, in Abuja, after a brief illness.

In a statement issued by the Council’s Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the council described her untimely death as a significant shock to the Union.

The statement read, “The NUJ FCT Council received the news of the sudden demise of former Secretary Mrs. Rafat Salami with great disbelief and sorrow today, December 20, 2024.”

“Rafat was a tremendous asset to journalism, exemplifying the qualities of a dedicated journalist who served the Union with distinction in various roles.”

“She was regarded as a friend and mother figure to all.”

“Her unwavering dedication and commitment to the Union greatly contributed to the advancement of the profession during her time as Secretary. Rafat was a peace-loving, approachable individual who remained a steadfast member of our community.”

“She was not only a distinguished leader but also a treasured friend to many within the profession. Her commitment to professionalism and excellence will be fondly remembered.”

The council extends its heartfelt condolences to her immediate family, the NUJ Voice of Nigeria (VON) Chapel, the NUJ, and the entire management of VON during this difficult time.

Rafat held the position of Assistant Director of Digital Media at Voice of Nigeria (VON). She was also a former Assistant Secretary for the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria and was re-elected as the Institute’s Treasurer just last week.

In addition to her professional achievements, she founded the Okenite Foundation for Special Needs Children and worked as a Media Personnel with Habbabiya.

A native of Ihima in the Okenne Local Government Area of Kogi State, she is survived by three children.

Her burial will take place today at the Gudu Cemetery, in accordance with Islamic rites.
