In a significant legal development, prominent human rights lawyer and social critic, Mr. Dele Farotimi, was arraigned before the Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, following his arrest in Lagos on Tuesday. He has since been remanded in prison, sparking widespread condemnation across social media platforms.

Reports indicate that Farotimi’s detention has drawn sharp criticism, particularly after he was apprehended by police in Lagos and swiftly transferred to Ekiti State. The news of his arraignment was shared by Mr. Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) during the 2023 general elections, who provided updates on the situation through his X page.

Sowore highlighted that Farotimi faced a hasty prosecution process, being denied bail by an unnamed judge. The judge subsequently ordered his remand until December 10, when further proceedings will take place.

Expressing his outrage, Sowore remarked, “The Nigerian justice system is flawed; Dele Farotimi has been rushed through the courts and incarcerated after being denied bail by a predetermined judge in Ado Ekiti.” He further accused notable figures, including esteemed legal practitioner Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), and the Judiciary, of being complicit in orchestrating Farotimi’s predicament.

“The Police, Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, and the judicial officers had a plan in place even before the Ekiti State Command RRS (formerly SARS) operatives were dispatched to apprehend him. The case has now been adjourned until December 10, 2024,” Sowore stated.

This incident not only raises questions about the integrity of the legal system in Nigeria but also highlights the ongoing struggles faced by human rights advocates in the country. The public’s response continues to grow, as many call for transparency and justice in Farotimi’s case.
