The Nigerian Army has officially refuted rumors circulating on social media regarding the death of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.

Speculation arose that Lagbaja had succumbed to cancer while receiving treatment abroad. However, the Army labeled these assertions as “Fake News” in a statement released via their official X account.

The unfounded rumors appear to have originated from a post by Jackson Ude, which was subsequently echoed by various online sources without any verification from the Army or the Defence Headquarters.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, clarified that the COAS is currently on leave while attending to health matters abroad.

Nwachukwu emphasized that there is no leadership void within the Nigerian Army, noting that Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is overseeing operations during Lagbaja’s absence.

He remarked that some of the circulating stories are so absurd they do not warrant further discussion, while others stem from malicious intent meant to incite panic and confusion among both personnel and the public.

“To clarify, the Nigerian Army is a well-structured institution with established protocols for various situations. Prior to his leave, necessary measures were instituted for Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim to act as the COAS in his absence.

“This situation is not unique to the Army, as there have been occasions when unforeseen circumstances have kept service chiefs away for extended periods, with their Chiefs of Policy and Plans stepping in to manage operations.

“The Army Headquarters urges the public to maintain confidence in the Nigerian Army, assuring them that the Service is effectively addressing security challenges in the country and remains prepared to protect Nigeria against any threats to its territorial integrity.

“In conclusion, the Army Headquarters expresses gratitude to all concerned Nigerians who have shown support for Lt.-Gen. T.A. Lagbaja and continue to keep him in their thoughts and prayers,” he stated.
