The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reported a tragic accident involving a fully loaded tanker that suffered brake failure, leading to the unfortunate loss of three lives.

According to LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the incident took place around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at Second Rainbow, heading towards Mile 2 on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

A statement from Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, indicated that the tanker collided with two Volkswagen commercial buses and a Honda vehicle (KTU 223 GH).

“The victims, who were passengers in one of the Volkswagen buses, unfortunately succumbed to their injuries at the scene,” the statement noted.

LASTMA officers promptly arrived at the scene to manage the emergency, securing the area and transferring two of the deceased to the Festac Police Station. One family member was present to take custody of their loved one.

Emergency services, including the Lagos State Fire Services and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), were also on-site to assist.

Mr. Bakare-Oki expressed his condolences to the families affected, underscoring the critical need for road safety.

“We are profoundly saddened by this tragedy. It is imperative for tanker drivers to adhere to speed limits and prioritize safety, particularly when transporting hazardous materials. Safety on our roads should never be compromised.” (NAN)
