In a show of solidarity, Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, visited the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin Elkanemi, to offer support to the victims of the devastating flood that recently swept through Maiduguri.

This is contained in a statement by the Oba’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr  Osaigbovo Iguobaro on Monday in Benin.

The statement quoted Oba Ewuare as praying that the Almighty and his forebears protect the survivors of the disaster and comfort them.

NAN recalls that the flood, which occurred after the Alau Dam overflowed its banks following heavy rainfall on September 10, left many communities residents displaced in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

The flood was said to have affected over 122,751 people, destroying homes, infrastructure, and means of livelihoods.

Oba Ewuare II expressed his deepest sympathy to the displaced persons and those who lost their  means of livelihoods in the disaster.

He emphasized the importance of addressing climate change and environmental degradation, stating that “climate change and environmental degradation are realities that we can no longer afford to ignore.”

The traditional ruler pledged his support to the people and government of Borno and commended the Shehu of Borno for his resilience in the face of adversity.

He also tasked stakeholders, including governments and traditional rulers, to take concrete actions to address climate change and promote sustainable practices.

In response, the Shehu of Borno thanked Oba Ewuare  for his solidarity visit and presented him with copies of his books.
