The Kano State government has confirmed that Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the Emir of Kano, following a ruling by the Federal High Court.

Elanzanews report that the announcement was made by Barrister Haruna Isah Dederi, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, during a press conference at the Government House.

He spoke on behalf of Governor Abba K. Yusuf and the state government.

Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman of the Federal High Court delivered the ruling earlier today.

The judgment upheld the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law, 2024, passed by the Kano State House of Assembly and signed by the Governor on 23 May 2024.

According to Dederi, the ruling reaffirms the state government’s actions, including the abolition of the five emirates created in 2019 and the deposition of the five emirs. Consequently, Sanusi, who was reinstated as Emir on 23 May 2024, retains his position as the legitimate Emir of Kano.

Dederi highlighted the broader implications of the court’s decision. He stated, “The ruling validates all actions taken by the government prior to the interim order of the honourable court.

This means the abolition of the five emirates created in 2019 and the deposition of the five emirs are also upheld by the Federal High Court. Thus, Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the Emir of Kano.”

Additionally, the judge granted the government’s application for a stay of proceedings until the Court of Appeal addresses the jurisdictional appeal.

Dederi expressed satisfaction with this development, noting that the signing of the law and Sanusi’s reinstatement were completed on 23 May 2024, before the interim order was served on 27 May 2024.
