The Senate leader, Bamidele Opeyemi, proudly announced that during President Godswill Akpabio’s tenure, they have successfully passed 25 legislations and 115 resolutions in just one year.

In a statement commemorating the one-year anniversary of the 10th National Assembly, Bamidele highlighted the Senate’s remarkable achievements and strategic collaborations over the past year.

Bamidele emphasized the vital role of the Parliament in nurturing and promoting representative democracy in Nigeria.

He stated that the Senate has been dedicated to positioning Nigeria for significant regional, sub-regional, and global leadership roles. Bamidele mentioned that the Senate has adopted a strategic partnership approach to foster resilient synergy with other branches of government, promoting a functional and viable federation.

“The Senate has introduced numerous bills, with a total of 477 bills presented since the start of the 10th Senate. Out of these, 25 bills have been successfully passed into law, accounting for 5.24% of the total bills introduced. The relatively low number of fully enacted legislations is due to the Senate’s commitment to addressing other vital national priorities as mandated by the Constitution,” he explained.

“In addition to the 25 fully enacted legislations, the Senate has reviewed 275 bills for the first time, with 135 bills awaiting first reading, 45 bills awaiting second reading, 43 bills at the committee stage, and three bills rejected on various grounds. While 13 bills originated from the executive arm, 464 bills were private member bills,” he added.

Bamidele further stated, “The Senate has also passed 115 resolutions, which have had far-reaching consequences for Nigeria’s economic development and the nation’s cohesion, growth, and stability. These resolutions were the result of motions of national importance sponsored by different Senators after thorough deliberation.” He also highlighted that the Senate successfully resolved 50 public petitions and confirmed 215 nominees for various political offices, including key appointments into the Federal Executive Council, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the leadership of the Nigeria Armed Forces, among others.

“These confirmations have played a crucial role in forming the national government and addressing critical issues of national interest,” he emphasized.

Bamidele expressed his confidence in Nigeria’s current stability and the promising future that lies ahead. He called upon the citizens to support the government at all levels in building a strong economy and an equitable federation that caters to the aspirations of all its constituents.

“Looking ahead, the Senate will focus on developing legal frameworks to stabilize the fiscal and monetary spaces, prioritize security, address consumer price inflation, and create a more functional governance structure. The ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution is part of the Senate’s efforts to establish a more efficient and responsive governance structure in various sectors,” he revealed.

Bamidele expressed his optimism for Nigeria’s brighter and more glorious future, urging collective support for the government’s endeavors to achieve national development.
