In a surprising turn of events, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.
Having served as an assistant to José Santos Peseiro for 20 months, George now steps into the role after Peseiro’s departure following the team’s remarkable run as runners-up at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire 2023.
During this transitional phase, George led the squad in an interim capacity during two friendly matches held in Morocco just last month.
George’s immediate focus will be on guiding the Super Eagles to victory in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic. Set to take place in Uyo and Abidjan respectively, these crucial matches are scheduled to occur within a little over five weeks.
With the team currently occupying third place in Group C of the African campaign, trailing behind Rwanda and South Africa, these matches are deemed as must-win encounters for the Super Eagles.
George faces the daunting task of rallying the team to overcome the obstacles and secure vital victories in the quest for World Cup qualification.
