In a pivotal judgment, the Supreme Court reinstates Caleb Mutfwang as Plateau State Governor, rebuffing the Court of Appeal’s prior decision.

The court, led by Justice Emmanuel Agim, unanimously upholds the merit of Governor Mutfwang’s appeal.

The November decision by the appeal court, disputing Mutfwang’s party sponsorship, is overruled by the Supreme Court.

The apex court declares Nentawe Yilwada of the APC as the rightful winner of the March 18, 2023, governorship election.

INEC’s declared results show Mutfwang securing 525,299 votes, surpassing Yilwada’s 481,370 votes.

The Plateau Governorship Election Petition Tribunal initially affirmed Mutfwang’s victory, triggering Yilwada’s appeal.

The Supreme Court questions the authority of the tribunal and the Court of Appeal to determine a candidate’s nomination validity.

Justice Agim emphasizes the need for the legal profession to reassess its role, leading to the reversal of the Court of Appeal’s judgment.

Justice Okoro expresses concern over the repercussions of the Court of Appeal’s erroneous decision, highlighting the allowance of Mutfwang’s appeal.

Justices Uwani Abba-Aji and Helen Ogunwumiju concur, solidifying the restoration of Governor Mutfwang’s election.

The Supreme Court emphatically declares its decision on the case as final, bringing an end to the legal battle over Plateau State’s governorship.
