In response to recent attempts to tarnish the reputation of Hon Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, Minister of Interior, by linking him to the EduGate scandal involving the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, Civil Society and Pro-democracy Groups have voiced their condemnation.

Acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s swift intervention, these groups emphasize the need for a thorough investigation without interference.

In a statement by Ismail Ibrahim Bakori, President of Arewa Voters Assembly (AVA), and Comrade Segun Adegoke of Progressive Action for Justice Unity and Democracy (PAJUD), they commend the democratic transition of power in 2023, setting the stage for accountability and transparency in elected offices.

Highlighting the attempt to link Hon Olubunmi Tunji Ojo with EduGate, the groups assert that, within eight months of assuming office, Ojo has demonstrated a clear mission and vision for addressing challenges within the Interior Ministry.

They emphasize his prompt actions, notably addressing the international passport scarcity, as evidence of his dedication to the Tinubu administration.

Criticizing the individuals behind the “campaign of calumny,” the groups note the lack of moral responsibility in the smear campaign against Hon Ojo.

They suggest that rather than engaging in mudslinging, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) should focus on constructive opposition, urging them to provide a credible alternative to the ruling APC.

Examining the fabricated allegations, the groups reveal that Hon Ojo established a company ten years ago, resigned from directorship in 2019, and has had no involvement since.

They point to his recent appearance on Channels TV, where he clarified the situation, providing Certified True Copy evidence from the Corporate Affairs Commission for public verification.

Affirming Hon Ojo’s positive impact, the groups commend his efforts in reforming the Interior Ministry, turning it into a world-class, result-oriented institution.

They highlight initiatives such as the implementation of reciprocity in international relations and policies ensuring respect for Nigerian passport holders.

Despite relentless efforts to tarnish his reputation, the groups encourage Hon Ojo to remain focused on his mission, dismissing the accusations as a conspiracy by the dismantled passport racketeering cartel seeking revenge.

They emphasize that these attacks aim to sway public opinion against the government.
