South Africa, the host of the 2010 World Cup, has been absent from subsequent tournaments, including the 2014, 2018, and 2022 editions.

However, with the recent preliminary draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, head coach Hugo Broos remains hopeful of securing a spot in the highly anticipated tournament.

In the draw conducted in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, on July 13, 2023, South Africa found themselves seeded alongside Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Benin, Rwanda, and Lesotho in Group A for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The grouping poses a formidable challenge, but Broos believes in his team’s potential to navigate through.

Despite the tough away games awaiting his team, Broos expresses confidence in South Africa’s growth and improved performance over the past two years.

He acknowledges that the upcoming qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup cannot be compared to the previous ones in 2022, emphasizing the development of a better team and the possibility of securing a top spot in the group.

In the 2022 World Cup, Ghana, Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, and Cameroon represented Africa, while South Africa missed out for the third time since hosting the tournament in 2010.

Broos, however, believes that his team has what it takes to break the jinx and qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He highlights the significance of the challenging away games, which will play a crucial role in their journey.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, having lost their previous World Cup qualification to Ghana, are determined to secure a ticket for the 2026 tournament.

With South Africa among their group rivals, the stage is set for an exciting and intense battle as both teams strive to claim the qualifying spot.
