Grammy Award-winning American jazz singer and songwriter Cassandra Wilson died on Wednesday at her home in Jackson, Mississippi, United States, her manager, Robert Torre, has announced. She was 70.
Torre said Wilson died peacefully, surrounded by family, close friends and her manager, although no cause of death was disclosed. The singer’s family and close associates subsequently requested privacy.
“Cassandra Wilson transitioned peacefully at home, surrounded by family, close friends, and her manager,” Torre said in a statement, describing her as a “legendary jazz artist.”
Wilson was celebrated for her rich and expressive contralto voice during a career that spanned three decades and established her as one of the distinctive voices in American jazz.
Her career earned her two Grammy Awards.
In 1997, Wilson won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for her album, New Moon Daughter.
Twelve years later, she claimed another Grammy, this time for Best Jazz Vocal Album, after Loverly won the award in 2009.
Beyond her solo career, Wilson also made her mark through collaborations with several influential musicians.
She played a leading role in Blood on the Fields, a 1997 oratorio by acclaimed American trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis.
The work made history as the first jazz composition to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
Wilson also collaborated with saxophonists Steve Coleman and Greg Osby, as well as the American hip-hop group, The Roots.
Her influence extended beyond traditional jazz, with her music drawing from different strands of African-American and diasporic musical traditions.
Reacting to her death, musician Jon Batiste expressed sadness over the loss, describing Wilson’s voice and musical approach as unmistakable.
“I learned so much from her, and I am so sad she has passed away,” Batiste wrote in a tribute shared on social media.
He praised Wilson for blending folkloric, R&B and diasporic music with experimental and popular genres.
“She had an unmistakable vocal tone, phrasing, and her approach of weaving folkloric, R&B, and diasporic music together with experimental and popular genres had a major impact on me,” he said.
“She sounded like the South.”
Wilson’s death marks the loss of a major American jazz voice whose music crossed genre boundaries while retaining a strong connection to her Southern roots.
Her three-decade career, marked by Grammy recognition, landmark collaborations and influential performances, cemented her place in the history of contemporary jazz.
