Party claims Presidency's attacks betray fear of Oyo governor's rising popularity

The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has declared that Governor Seyi Makinde will defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, dismissing recent attacks from the Presidency as evidence of mounting anxiety within the ruling camp.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, said the Presidency’s resort to “diatribes and disparagement” against its preferred candidate only confirms nervousness about Governor Makinde’s growing political stature.

The APM criticised the administration’s decision to deploy Daniel Bwala as a spokesperson, describing the presidential aide as an “internationally discredited” figure whose recent Al Jazeera interview on March 6, 2026, exposed the government’s desperation.

“President Tinubu no longer commands the support of credible Nigerians,” Mr Yusuf stated. “Daniel Bwala will soon eat his own words against Governor Makinde.”

The party insisted that the 2027 contest would be between Governor Makinde—backed by millions of Nigerians seeking “a new beginning”—and a president supported only by “a handful of sycophantic, corrupt, arrogant and morally depraved minions on his payroll”.

Citing Governor Makinde’s record in Oyo State, the APM argued that the presidency has reason to be apprehensive. According to data from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), Oyo State has surpassed the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in economic viability—a feat the party believes Nigerians want replicated nationally.

The APM further claimed that over 50 million young Nigerians, whose “destinies are being caged by the Tinubu administration”, are rallying behind Governor Makinde as “the face of the new Nigeria”.

The party dismissed suggestions that its candidate is “inconsequential”, stating: “Before noon on election day, the Presidency will know who actually is inconsequential in this race.”

While vowing not to be drawn into “a war of insults”, the APM challenged the Presidency to engage with substantive issues or withdraw from the race entirely.

“We counsel those speaking for the Presidency to engage Nigerians with issues or advise their principal to withdraw if he has nothing to offer,” the statement concluded.
