In a significant development for national security, two senior commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group, Mahmud Usman and Abubakar Abba, have entered guilty pleas to a 32-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The defendants, also known as Mahmud Al-Nigeri and Abu Baraa, admitted to a litany of offences, including terrorism financing, kidnapping for ransom, illegal mining, and the fabrication of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The charges also detailed their coordination of sleeper cells, strategic planning of attacks, and active maintenance of links with jihadist factions operating across the Sahel and Maghreb regions.

Justice Emeka Nwite presided over the session in which the defendants were re-arraigned, formally reversing their initial not-guilty pleas.

Following the reading of the charges, prosecuting counsel David Kwase invoked section 274(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, urging the court to proceed with immediate conviction. In response, the defence counsel acknowledged the unequivocal nature of the pleas but requested the court consider the defendants’ change of heart as a signal of repentance.

At their original arraignment, Usman had been convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison for one count of illegal mining intended to finance arms procurement. However, he had maintained his innocence on the remaining charges, while Abba had pleaded not guilty to all counts.

The court has adjourned the matter to Wednesday for the presentation of the full facts and sentencing.

Context: This guilty plea comes at a critical time as Nigerian security forces intensify operations against terrorist infrastructure. The change in plea from commanders who once maintained ties with the broader Sahelian jihadist network could potentially provide strategic insights into the group’s funding mechanisms and operational gaps. Both defendants now face the prospect of life sentences under Nigerian anti-terrorism legislation, which would mark one of the most significant judicial outcomes against high-value terrorist operatives in recent years.
