South Africa’s Bafana Bafana saw their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey grind to a heartbreaking halt on Sunday, suffering a 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Canada in the round of 32 at the Los Angeles Stadium.

The loss, the first fixture of the knockout stage, leaves only eight African nations still competing as the remainder of the round gets underway on Monday.

Hugo Broos’s men seized the early momentum, crafting several close-range chances that threatened to break the deadlock. However, a persistent lack of cutting edge in the final third prevented the South Africans from converting their attacking impetus into a decisive lead.

Just as the match appeared destined for extra time, Canada struck in the second minute of five added minutes. Stephen Eustaquio collected the ball on the edge of the box and fired a clinical drive beyond the reach of the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, sparking wild celebrations in the stands.

South Africa mounted a desperate late assault in search of an equaliser, but their efforts arrived too late to salvage the contest, bringing an abrupt end to their historic campaign in North America.

For Canada, who finished second in their group and will now play all subsequent matches away from home, the victory sets up a last-16 showdown against the winners of the Netherlands versus Morocco clash.
