Nsukka – The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has significantly strengthened security measures across its main campus in response to an alleged impending terrorist attack aimed at abducting students.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Egwu, said the move prioritises the safety and protection of staff, students, and visitors.

As part of the precautionary measures, the university has deployed personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army to key entry points, complementing the institution’s internal security unit. Several access gates to the Nsukka campus will be temporarily closed to enhance movement monitoring and regulation.

Additionally, management has suspended motorcycle operations within the campus with immediate effect.

“No motorcycle will be permitted beyond the university gates, except those belonging to authorised security personnel,” the statement read. “Staff who commute on motorcycles are advised to park at designated locations outside the campus perimeter before proceeding to their offices.”

The university acknowledged that the security tightening followed a social media post alleging an impending terrorist attack and mass abduction of students on the Nsukka campus.

However, management clarified that there is no credible security intelligence or verified threat supporting the claims circulating online.

“The information being circulated on social media is unsubstantiated and should not be regarded as factual,” the statement said. “The measures being taken by the university are precautionary and proactive.”

Members of the university community have been urged to remain calm and go about their normal activities without fear, while remaining vigilant and security-conscious. Any suspicious persons or movements should be reported to the university’s security department or the nearest security agency.

“Security is a collective responsibility,” the statement added. “The cooperation of all staff, students, and other stakeholders is essential in maintaining a peaceful and secure environment.”
