Maiduguri – Troops of the Nigerian Military Joint Task Force have killed more than 1,000 terrorists in the North-east over the past three months, including 57 commanders and senior leaders, an official has confirmed.

Major-General Abdulsalam Abubakar, Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, disclosed the figures during a briefing with journalists in Maiduguri on Tuesday, outlining significant progress in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign.

While noting that insurgent activities have seen a marked reduction, the commander stressed the need for unity and patriotism across all sectors. He urged the media in particular to help counter misinformation and fake news surrounding military operations in the region.

Abubakar also reported a decline in the number of terrorists surrendering, compared with the 16,000 insurgents who gave themselves up in 2023. He emphasised that community engagement and robust intelligence gathering remain essential to dismantling terrorist networks.

The theatre commander reaffirmed the military’s commitment to non-kinetic strategies aimed at preventing terrorist infiltration into civilian communities. He announced that greater attention and support would be directed toward education, infrastructure development, and community outreach programmes to help sustain peace.

“The military remains fully committed to protecting lives and property across Nigeria,” Abubakar assured.
