The English side broke the deadlock late in the first half when Viktor Gyökeres calmly converted a penalty in the 44th minute after a foul inside the box. Arsenal carried that advantage into the interval, having absorbed early pressure from Atlético, who created several half-chances but failed to capitalise.

The hosts responded after the break, and their persistence paid off in the 56th minute. Julian Alvarez equalised from the spot following a VAR review that overturned an earlier decision. The goal shifted momentum in favour of Atlético, who pushed for a winner, but Arsenal’s defence—marshalled by goalkeeper David Raya—held firm under sustained pressure.

The closing stages were marked by controversy, including a late penalty initially awarded to Arsenal before being overturned by another VAR review, prompting protests from the visitors. Both sides created chances in the dying minutes: Atlético’s Nahuel Molina fired narrowly over in stoppage time, while Declan Rice saw a powerful effort blocked as Arsenal searched for a late winner.

Ultimately, neither side could find a decisive goal. The encounter showcased Atlético’s tactical discipline under Diego Simeone and Arsenal’s resilience in high-stakes European football, with both teams demonstrating attacking intent and defensive solidity.

With the aggregate score level, attention now turns to the second leg, where a place in the Champions League final will be at stake in what promises to be another fiercely contested battle.
