Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, on Wednesday hailed former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, describing him as a towering statesman whose legacy continues to shape Nigeria and Africa.

Dogara said Obasanjo remains “a statesman of uncommon stature” and a living testimony of grace, noting that his leadership journey has left an enduring imprint on the nation’s political history.

The ex-Speaker, who currently chairs the Nigerian Credit Guarantee Company Limited, said Obasanjo’s rise from a young military commander to Nigeria’s Head of State and later a democratically elected president reflected rare resilience and vision.

Dogara noted that few African leaders had successfully navigated both military and civilian leadership with the level of influence Obasanjo commanded.

He said the former president’s years in office were defined by service rather than personal gain, stressing that his administration strengthened democratic institutions during Nigeria’s transition from military rule.

Dogara also credited Obasanjo with spearheading anti-corruption efforts and implementing economic reforms that repositioned the country at a critical time.

Beyond Nigeria, the former Speaker said Obasanjo earned global respect through his role in African peace efforts, particularly in conflict mediation across the continent.

He added that the elder statesman’s interventions in peace processes and diplomacy helped amplify Africa’s voice in global affairs.

Dogara further described Obasanjo as a mentor and moral compass whose courage to speak truth to power had guided the nation through difficult periods.

“At 89, Baba Obasanjo stands as a living testimony of God’s grace and favour,” Dogara said, praying for the former president’s continued strength and wisdom.

Many Nigerians, he added, see the milestone not only as a celebration of longevity but also a moment to reflect on a life defined by sacrifice, resilience and service to humanity.
