The Kano State Police Command has apprehended three main suspects in connection with the horrific murder of a housewife and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano, on Saturday. The suspects are also linked to a prior killing of two women in the Tudun Yola area of the commercial city.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Command confirmed that the arrests were made under the supervision of the State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.
“The Kano State Police Command has employed intelligence-led policing to apprehend three suspected masterminds behind the brutal murder of a housewife and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano, on 17th January 2026,” the statement read.
The suspects have been identified as Umar Auwalu, 23, from Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu, also known as Chebe, 40, from Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, commonly referred to as Wawo, 21, from Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters. They were arrested during a sting operation conducted between 10pm on Saturday, 17 January, and 4am on Sunday, 18 January 2026.
Police disclosed that Umar Auwalu, the suspected leader of the group and a nephew of the deceased woman, confessed to the Dorayi Chiranchi killings during interrogation.
ELANZANEWS reports that investigators have also linked the suspects to a previous incident in Tudun Yola Quarters, where two housewives were reportedly murdered and their bodies set ablaze.
“The syndicate leader, Umar Auwalu, a nephew of the deceased housewife, confessed to the crime and admitted that the same group has carried out a series of brutal killings and attacks recently, including the murder and incineration of two housewives in Tudun Yola Quarters, Kano,” the PPRO stated.
The Tudun Yola murders, which occurred weeks earlier, had raised public concern over rising violent crime in parts of Kano metropolis, prompting calls for decisive action from security agencies.
Items recovered from the suspects included four blood-stained garments, two mobile phones belonging to the deceased, a machete, a club, and an undisclosed sum of money allegedly stolen from the Dorayi Chiranchi scene, along with other dangerous weapons.
The police confirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured residents that all those involved in the crimes would face prosecution.
The Police Command commended the officers involved in the operation and expressed gratitude to the public for their prayers, support, and cooperation, reiterating its commitment to ensuring public safety throughout Kano State.
