Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero of the evening, making two vital saves during the shootout, including a crucial stop against Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.

Ademola Lookman then confidently converted the decisive penalty, clinching the bronze medal for Nigeria — marking their ninth third-place finish in AFCON history.

The match itself was a tightly contested, physical encounter, characterised by relentless running but few clear opportunities.

Nigeria believed they had taken the lead just before half-time when Paul Onuachu finished from Akor Adams, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review.

With neither side able to find the net in a tense second half, the match concluded 0-0, leading straight to penalties.

Despite Fisayo Dele-Bashiru missing Nigeria’s opening kick, Nwabali’s immediate saves from Egypt’s first two attempts shifted the momentum in Nigeria’s favour.

The subsequent penalty takers for Nigeria were flawless, allowing Lookman to secure victory and maintain Nigeria’s impeccable record in AFCON third-place matches.
